Celestial maps are an indispensable help to know the position of a star in the sky. To know the star charts, imagine that all the stars are in an ideal sphere, of infinite radius, having the center coinciding with that of our planet, and that it is usually called the "celestial sphere".
Also the cartographic representation of the sky or star mapping follow the rules of the planetary earth. The celestial sphere is assigned a system of Celestial Coordinates so that each position occupied by a star is defined by two coordinates - in general, the straight ascension and the declination are joined -, just as any point on the earth's surface is defined by two coordinates: longitude and latitude.
Stereographic or Mercator projections are used for star maps, as polar or equatorial zones of the celestial sphere must be represented: in the most precise atlases, the entire celestial sphere is subdivided into numerous areas that are then enlarged and reproduced, precisely , on the flat surface of the sheet. With this technique, the deformations of the angles are minimized.
